I wanted somewhere in Doncaster where I could go and have a good time and feel safe. After going to Under the Stars in Sheffield I decided it was time we had a similar night club in Doncaster. With support from staff Doncaster Council staff, Sine Fm and Ruth from Under the Stars Sheffield they have helped me to get the idea off the ground.
We’ve already been having meetings, giving presentations and training people to be DJ’s on the night ready for the big night happening at Westways on September 2nd.
The real good news is that Under the Stars Doncaster has made a huge difference in my life, It has made me feel very proud and I want to pull it off so people with Learning disabilities in Doncaster have a place they can come, have a good time, meet new friends and be safe, I cant wait.
Afson’s mum, Val, has seen a real change in him through his involvement in the project to set up the club night in Doncaster, she said: “It’s been a really good learning curve for Afson, particularly when he has stood up in front of a room full of people and presented his ideas and asked them for support.”
I have been on the committee for Under the Stars nightclub from the start. I had been to Beautiful Octopus nightclub in Leeds but was really happy to set something up in Sheffield. At the meetings, we plan and talk about the events. I am a DJ and MC (master of ceremonies). At our nightclubs in Sheffield, people with learning disabilities can have a good night out that is safe and they can meet new friends. We have live bands as well as DJs.
Last year, I went on a DJ course at Sheffield Live and I am now part of the Communities Live team, we broadcast every Monday and Tuesday. I have been on Radio Sheffield and Sine FM to talk about Under the Stars coming to Doncaster. In July, I met Martyn Ware from Heaven 17 and he agreed to be our patron. I had my photo taken with him. I’ve never met an 80s pop legend before, it was good to meet him and it made me feel happy. I feel proud to be part of Under the Stars, we’re all part of a team.
